Exploration 4

Fresh is about food and agriculture, it's really more about adopting a new perspective, a different understanding of our relationship to each other and the world. It celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are inventing our food system and it is a reflection of a rising movement of people and communities across America. The theme of this film is about inspiration not scaring tactics. The film offers a practical vision for the future of sustainable agriculture and empowers ordinary people to take action that incites real change. It celebrates the farmers that are really making a difference  individuals like Milwaukee’s own Will Allen, whose vision and guidance has made Growing Power one of the most successful urban farming projects in the nation.  Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity.

Industrial agro-business as we know it, replete as it is with noxious pesticides, animal concentration camps, monocultures that exhaust vast expanses of land, is an unsustainable paradox. While it aims at feeding us all at a low price, it depletes the land and poisons us with mutated strains of various bacteria. The problems are as clearly presented as the many convincing solutions, including Growing Power’s urban farming.

In film Joel Salatin explained how everything has a place in nature, how nothing is wasted. In nature, bacteria, manure, fungus, trees, grass, sunlight, water... all play a part in the wonderful and mysterious process of creating and maintaining life.

This whole film tells industrial farm and organic farm and the difference between them. I learn from this movie is organic farm is better than industrial farm because in organic farm we don’t use any chemicals. But in industrial farm we use chemicals, pesticides, machines which cause environment pollution and also get different diseases. Today’s market we get food in cheap cost which are produced by industrial farm but it is good to spend more money to buy good and healthy food which are from organic farm.

  1. "Fresh is about food and agriculture, it's really more about adopting a new perspective, a different understanding of our relationship to each other and the world." I think this statement you made was very true. I like the way you worded this sentence. The word fresh is really associated with food and agriculture. Our food should be fresh and we should all get a different understanding like you stated.

  2. "Animal concentration camps," is a good way of describing these factory farms in which thousands of livestock are headed and stored together. And you are exactly right. These factory farms are animal versions of concentration camps, without the hard labor and death. They are large masses of animals to where diseases are prone to spread and where the animals are forced to eat certain feed, so that they can become large for production.

I really like that you put this into your blog post because it very bold and true. Although we pay more for organic food, we are really doing our bodies a favor by consuming that instead of industrialized food. Hopefully one day the majority of the food at the grocery is organic and better for us!
