37% of rapes and sexual assaults

  3. 10. What is the connection between rape and alcohol use and how many college women are raped each year in the United States?

It is noted that 55% of sexual assault reports, are by college women who have been engaged in drinking. The link between alcohol consumption and rape among college women, is well connected, due to the fact that the college women who drink can easily be taken advantage of by either intoxicated or sober men. Using the two questions to be intertwined, it is shown that college women are prime examples of the connection between alcohol and rape. And it is shown, that nearly 1 out of 20 college women are sexually assaulted every year.

  5. 17. What role does peer pressure play in underage drinking?

Peer pressure from ones peers can result in one doing something that they would not normally do, or do not want to do in order to fit in with the people around them. Many teens give into underage drinking simply because the people that they are with are doing it and want them to join in.

  9. Why is the Super Bowl famous for alcohol advertising and which commercials have garnered the most attention, whether praise or criticism?

The Super Bowl is known for its wide variety of alcohol advertising. Many of these alcohol commercials are aired because many people drink while watching the super bowl and there are so many viewers so it is good for their product. Two of the most highly rated commercials during the Super Bowl Budweiser's "A Heros Welcome" and "Bud Lights Ian up for Whatever."

  10. 3. How much money is spend on advertising for alcohol each year?

In my research, I find out the alcohol advertisers spent $2 billion on alcohol advertising in measured media such as television, radio, print, outdoor, and newspaper in 2005. The alcohol advertising had a big influences on young people. Most young people had a desire to drink according to the USA Today's survey. I think there are many different type of advertising for alcohol in the radio and outdoor. I think its really important issues because it can't affect young teenagers to drink.

    1. I think it is crazy how much money is spent on alcohol advertisements! I think Americans really do focus a lot of events around alcohol like going out with friends, sports games, parties etc. With so many people being addicts to alcohol, you would think that groups of people would fight to have less alcohol advertisements. While watching the Super Bowl last Sunday, I saw a wide variety of advertisements for alcohol, and they all seemed to have a positive vibe.

    2. Two billion is a large amount of money to spend on something that isn't important in the big picture. That money could be going to something so much more important and useful for our world like charities. I don't think the alcohol companies care if they're attracting teenagers to drink their brand because it makes them money. I think they try to make it look so glamorous when it can destroy lives and families.

      Delete
    3. The amount of money spent on alcohol advertisements surprised me also! I agree with Gabrielle in the fact that I would think lots of people would fight to have less alcohol advertisements shown on tv.

    4. Its not very shocking to me that alcohol advertisers spend that much money on branding their company. I find it to be pretty sad how much society centers their lives around alcohol.

    5. I did not expect the amount of money spent on marketing alcohol to be that high honestly, I think alcohol plays a big part in our society as it's used in a lot of recreational activities so it makes sense why they market it so much as it's really profitable

  12. I had question 18 " What famous celebrities have had alcohol abuse problems, and how has this affected his or her careers?"

I think we all could list off a handful of celebrities that we have seen in the tabloids or on TV with substance abuse problems. Two main ones I picked out are Lindsey Lohan and Britney Spears. Both of these celebrities have had alcohol problems and the whole world has been able to see that. They are constantly all over tabloids, blogs like Perez Hilton, and TV segments like Enews. This would be great for them if it wasnt to show the world their problems and personal life. Because they're in the public eye it seems that we know when they've gone to court, jail, rehab, or get in trouble with the law. We no longer hear about their attempts to relaunch their careers or any new work they've done because of their alcohol abuse. They no longer have anything that the public eye values and their careers have vanished for the most part.

A question should be should be be able to put the celebrities personal information out to the public like that?

  13. 13) What is binge drinking? How does it happen and where might it happen?

Binge drinking used to mean drinking heavily over several days. Now, however, the term refers to the heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time (just as binge eating means a specific period of uncontrolled overeating).

Today the generally accepted definition of binge drinking in the United States is the consumption of five or more drinks in a row by men — or four or more drinks in a row by women — at least once in the previous 2 weeks. Heavy binge drinking includes three or more such episodes in 2 weeks.

Liquor stores, bars, and alcoholic beverage companies make drinking seem attractive and fun. It's easy for a high school student to get caught up in a social scene with lots of peer pressure. Inevitably, one of the biggest areas of peer pressure is drinking.

Other reasons why people drink include:

-They're curious — they want to know what it's like to drink alcohol.
-They believe that it will make them feel good, not realizing it could just as easily make them sick and hung-over.
-They may look at alcohol as a way to reduce stress, even though it can end up creating more stress.
    -They want to feel older.

    1. I think a lot of people binge drink because they get caught up in the moment and do not realize how much they are drinking. I also think many people binge drink because they are drinking to have fun, like at a party, going out with friends, watching sports games etc. The generally accepted definition of binge drinking that you posted above may seem to make a lot of people seem like binge drinkers even though they may not become drunk off of that amount of drinks. But I do think binge drinking is a problem especially with under agers.

    2. I am very surprised that the accepted drink of the United States is five or more drinks. Binge drinking I think has become a huge problem in teenagers. Many underage drinkers drinking is new to them so they drink to get drunk rather then casually drink. I also agree with the fact that many teenagers get caught up in the scene of drinking a lot. A question this raises for me is should we try to spread the news about the health risks of binge drinking to teenagers more or should be simply tell them to not drink alcohol at all?

  14. 7. What are the main reasons people may choose when they abstain from drinking alcohol?

The main reason people abstain from drinking alcohol is because of religious purposes. People also abstain because of health purposes. Some people abstain because of a family history of dependence on alcohol and the fear of that makes them abstain. Many people also abstain from alcohol when they have families as they know of bad tendencies that occur when they drink.

  15. How many drinks can a person have before they are too drunk to drive a car, and how many people get DUI's each year in Ohio? What are the penalties?

Nobody gets drunk off the same amount of alcohol intake. It depends on their gender, weight, what medications they are on, what they had to eat before etc. Therefore there is no exact number on how many drinks a person can have before being too drunk to drive a car. In 2009, the Ohio State Highway Patrol alone made 13,506 DUI arrests. In 2013, a total of 19,088 people were arrested for a DUI. The penalties for receiving a DUI vary based on how many DUI's you have received before, how much damage/injuries happened because of your DUI, and level of BAC you received. The more DUI's you have, if people were injured, and if your BAC was at or above .17 then your penalty will be worse than someone who has never had a DUI, did not cause any harm to anyone, and had a lower BAC of .17. For first time offenders, you may have to take a special DUI class for three days or you may be put in jail for 3 days to 6 months. Not only may you receive jail time but you may as well face fines up to $1,000. It does not end there because your license may be suspended for 6 months to 3 years. If you receive anymore than one DUI's then your penalties are much worse including outrageous fines, long durations of jail time and a permanent license suspension.

  16. Americans who drink alcohol generally favor beer and wine over hard liquor. This trend has been nearly the same over several years, but the preference between beer and wine is nearly the same today. At the beginning stages of alcohol consumption, Americans strongly favored beer over both wine and beer.

  17. People sometimes drink for enjoyment. When people drink they are in trouble. People drink to keep their pain inside. Like if they really miss up something good in their life they drink to keep the pain, they don’t want to feel. The average American drinks 470 alcoholic drinks a year. Men drink more than women because we don’t miss up like guys do. “With male drinkers reporting they consumed 6.2 drinks, on average, in the past week, compared with 2.2 for women. Younger men, ages 18 to 49, are the heaviest drinkers of any age group or gender.” They consume alcohol at least occasionally, so they don’t drink that much.

  19. 1. What are the main drawbacks to alcoholism in the workplace or job? What effect does it have on business profits or productivity?

Out of millions who hold full time employment in the United States, nearly 15 million are heavy drinkers of alcohol. This is a huge drawback for companies because these heavy drinking employees tend to miss a lot of work because they suffer from health problems caused by excessive amounts of alcohol and are also at a greater risk of harming themselves and others in the work place because of their addiction. This affects businesses productivity because if the person is repeatedly missing work due to alcohol problems then products that he or she could be selling are not being sold. That is the obvious reason that alcoholism effects the workplace but an unobvious way it affects productivity is the persons attitude at work, the article said that alcoholics tends to be grumpy and unhappy at work because they are not drunk and this brings this down the moral of the other employees who are trying to do their job.

    2. How much do Americans drink each year, and how big is this business in sales and consumers?

According to an annual Gallup survey, a majority of adults in the United States drink alcohol and on average they have four beverages a week. Two-thirds of them said that they drink alcohol occasionally. This poll was taken on July 9-12, 2012. The survey found that 22 percent of the drinkers said they sometimes drink too much. When the drinkers were asked which kind of alcohol they drink most often, 39 percent said beer, 35 percent said wine and 22 percent said liquor. This brings us to beer, highest alcohol consumed, and how big their sales are. In the United States beer is manufactured by more than 2,100 breweries making 96 billions dollars a year! The United States produced 196 million barrels of beer in 2009, which is roughly 20 gallons of beer per person annually. Alcohol profits seems to be the only industry unaffected by national problems because when America is doing good people drink to celebrate and when its doing bad people often drink to ease their mind.
