Aziz Hamid Exploration on Ecology annd Energy Use

Reusable Bags

The problem I focused on is reusable bags/plastic bags. This affects mostly everyone especially groceries and retail stores. Plastic bags are very bad for the environment. First, plastic bags kill thousands of marine mammals every year.  Many marine mammals like dolphins and sea turtles die after mistakenly eating plastic bags as food. Another reason plastic bag is bad for the environment is plastic bags are biodegradable. Plastic bags break down into very small toxic particles that contaminate the soil and water. It takes hundreds of years for plastic bags to decompose Also the production of plastic bags requires millions of gallons of petroleum. By banning the production of plastic bags it would significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Plastic bags floats everywhere in the environment. They easily build up in the environment in places such as trees, city parks, and the ocean because of the wind blowing them. Plastics bags are very inexpensive to produce. Most of the grocery and retail stores use them to bag people's purchases.
One possible solution is to ban the use of plastic bags. Instead you can use reusable bags. Many places around the world have laws that ban the use of plastics such as Aspen, Colorado. Hawaii recently became the first state in the United States to ban plastic bags at checkout counters.  Another solution is placing a fee in grocery and retail stores.
A weakness  is reusable bags are the source for bacteria, including the E. coli, and that bag bans will cause many people to get food poisoning. Throwing the reusable bags in the laundry will help reduce the chances of bacteria. The reusable bag make sense to me because you can reuse reusable bags multiple times before having to discard it, on the other hand plastic bags are meant to be used only a few times. Also it costs more to recycle a plastic bag than to make a new one.
In the future banning the plastic bags will affect the manufacturers of those plastic bags. Those companies will have to come up with more environmentally plastic bags. The problem  with plastic bags right now is it fills up landfills which can be an issue in the future.

  1. "One possible solution is to ban the use of plastic bags. Instead you can use reusable bags." I agree with this statement, I think that it is unnecessary to use plastic when we have reusable bags.

  2. "It takes hundreds of years for plastic bags to decompose." I like this sentence because it shows that no matter where you put a plastic bag, there is no fast way to get rid of the plastic and it is going to be around for a long time.
